OAuth login is live

As you’ve no doubt noticed by now, we’ve changed the way you login to Twuffer. Twitter requires that we now use OAuth for Twuffer accounts. The official deadline to implement OAuth is Monday, Aug 16, 2010.

*** Please note that you must login once using the new method as soon as possible. Otherwise, tweets scheduled to go out after Monday (Aug 16, 2010) might not be sent.

Twuffer OAuth login button

What does that mean for Twuffer users?

Instead of entering your Twitter username and password in the upper right at twuffer.com, there is now a “Login with Twitter” button.

Clicking this button will direct you to a Twitter OAuth login page where you will enter your Twitter username and password and click “Allow” to authenticate.

This page will look familiar to most of you. It’s purpose is to confirm that you would like for Twuffer to be able to post your scheduled tweets on your behalf.

If you are a new Twuffer user, you will be delivered back to your Twuffer dashboard tab to set your timezone.

If you are an existing Twuffer user, you will be delivered to your queued tweets tab.

Besides the new login, Twuffer will allow you to schedule tweets as normal.

Why aren’t my Tweets posting?

You’ve noticed that some of your tweets haven’t been posting? Sorry. That is not good.

As it turns out, Twitter made a little change sometime last week (as far as we can tell) whereby “A status update with text identical to the authenticating user’s current status will be ignored to prevent duplicates.” We imagine this was implemented to cut down on Twitter spammers.

So, a problem of late has been that when Twuffer encountered one of these duplicate tweets, Twitter stopped responding the way it used to. The change caused Twuffer to abort sending every subsequent tweet in the batch that hour. We’ve updated our script.

A word of warning: from now on, if the scheduled tweet Twuffer is trying to send for you is identical to your latest tweet, it WILL NOT be sent.

Twuffer <3s OAuth integration *

Until now, all you needed to use Twuffer was your Twitter username and password. For security reasons, Twitter has recently asked us to use OAuth, and we think that’s a good idea as well. Today we are integrating OAuth for Twitter authentication.

New Twuffer users: welcome!
Registering to use Twuffer is still easy, but will now also include an OAuth process whereby you will need to enter your Twitter username and password to allow Twuffer to post tweets on your behalf.

Current Twuffer users: same ol’ Twuffer-now with OAuth!
We will be creating Twuffer accounts for you. Just log in with your Twitter username and password as usual. Then, the OAuth process will ask you for your Twitter username and password again to grant Twuffer access to post on your behalf.

You will be able to change your Twuffer account credentials after logging in.

Please note that within 48 hours, all users will be required to authenticate via OAuth for tweets to be sent. This includes tweets already in your queue.

* This upgrade may require us to take Twuffer down for a bit. Please bear with us, and reschedule tweets as needed. We’ll send out a tweet notifying you when the change has occurred. Be sure to follow Twuffer.

An Ode to Twuffer, by @sidewaysthinker

Thanks to Michael Dobson who sent us this fantastic Seuss-esque feat of literary genius. Keep on Twuffing, Dr. Dobson.

An Ode to Twuffer
(With apologies to Dr. Seuss)

I post my tweets on Twuffer.
Twuffer is a Twitter buffer.
The Twitter buffer buffers Twitters
so you can write a lot of tweets
And post them via Twuffer
So that Twuffer (the Twitter buffer)
Can release them every day.

So every day at twelve precisely
The Twitter buffer (acting nicely)
Sends its Twitter out of Twuffer.
The tweet that comes from Twuffer
Enters Twitter from the Twuffer Twitter buffer
And from there it feeds to Facebook
And it also feeds to Blogger.

I have a blog on Blogger
And my Twitter buffer Twuffer
Feeds the tweet to my blog on Blogger.
There are also games for Blogger;
I thought of adding Frogger.

Then my Twitter buffer Twuffer
Would feed my tweet to Twtter
Which in turn would feed to Facebook
(Where I can promote my new book)
That on Blogger there is Frogger.

State of the Twuffer

Hi all. We know some of you are having issues with your tweets not “sticking” in the queue. What a nasty little bug.

Twuffer is a side project for us that we created as a free service for the public because we thought it would be neat to do. Lately, we’ve had to push it to the back burner so we could focus on more pressing (read: paying ) @gradybritton projects.

That said, there has recently been talk about assigning some time to fix this issue soon, and possibly release an update with new Twuffer features.

Thanks so much for your patience with us. As always, we appreciate any feedback, and love hearing from you. gb(at)twuffer.com

Getting the tweet added notification, but your tweet is missing from the queue?

If you are logged into Twuffer, but are inactive for a while, your session will expire. In short, adding tweets after your session has expired will still give you the “Your tweet was successfully added to the queue.” notification, but the tweet will not show up in your queued tweets.

We’re very sorry about how the “successfully added” thing is basically lying. We’re working on a permanent fix.

Meantime, logging out then back in will remedy the deceitful little bug.

We’ve added DST / EDT to the Settings panel for Twuffer users. Selecting “Yes” will add an hour to your current time zone setting.

Use Twuffer For Cause Marketing Initiatives

This is great! Thank you Jeff Turner (a.k.a. @respres) for creating this video. If you’re interested in using Twuffer and Twitter for what I like to call Social Media Cause Marketing, take a moment and watch this informative video where Turner demonstrates Twuffer’s user-friendly nature, using the application for Mothers Fighting For Others, an organization raising money to send 10 orphaned girls in Kenya to high school for a year.
